Sodwana Bay lies in a remote area on the east coast of Africa about 250 miles north of Durban and 370 miles southeast of Johannesburg. The bay lies within the Greater St. Lucia Wetlands Park, a World Heritage Site, and is surrounded by dense coastal forests filled with monkeys and hundreds of different species of birds. The park was established in 1979 to protect the country’s only coral reefs and has over 100 miles of beach that you can drive on to go exploring.

One of its main attractions is the shallow bay and a spit of rock jutting out into the Indian Ocean that partially protects the beach from the prevailing southerly winds and seas. You need that protection in South Africa because there are no marinas in Sodwana Bay. There are no launch ramps, no floating docks — no docks of any kind, for that matter. If you want to get your boat into the water here, you have to roll it down the beach and drop it into the surf. The surf launch is exhilarating !Needless to say, you’ll find no 50-footers trying a surf launch!

What they do have is billfish, some of the best grounds in the country. Sailys, Blues, Blacks and Stripeys all make their way past Sodwana at one time or another, and the area’s deep water and excellent bottom structure , combine to hold bait and game fish throughout the year.

We have long seasons, deep water within 2 miles of the beach and a tremendous number of canyons and reefs just offshore,” he says. “You can fish all year round here, and anything can happen from November through June.”

Sodwana Bay is considered to be among the premier dive sites of the world, it is home to the southern most tropical coral reefs on the planet which are further south than the Great Barrier Reef. The reef has an incredibly dense coral cover and wide diversity of fish, crustaceans and more with over 1200 species having been recorded in the area.

A Big 5 African safari in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi park, hippo and crocodile estuary cruises, Eco St Lucia wetlands system visits, turtle breading beach trips, Bird watching, deep sea game fishing, whale watching, Safari night drives, cultural Zulu village , blonde tropical beaches alongside the warm Indian ocean. And many more…

The lure, of the savage beauty of the deep sea waters and game plains of South Africa attract the serious anglers and hunters from around the world. Hundreds of these people from all over Europe and the United States make the pilgrimage to Kwa-Zulu Natal each year to get in on the area’s rich Fishing and Hunting grounds.

When you think of Marlin Fishing your mind automatically drives to the great offshore locations of Kenya or Mozambique. Before you jet off, Marlin Fishing has had a renaissance right here off the shores of Ballito just 40km North of Durban.

These majestic fish are something of a Holy Grail for sports fisherman.

There has been a significant spike in marlin fishing occurring off the North Coast of South Africa. In 2010 there were a number of records broken with boats landing 5 to 6 Marlin a day!

The Marlin season is predominantly from the latter part of the year, mainly October to January for the stripped marlin specie.

From January to March for the Black and Blue Marlin Specie.

All the Big Game Fishing peaks in February with Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, Dorrado, Barracuda and Tuna showing up in good numbers, with the water colour a deep purple blue and warm water temperatures ranging from 24 to 26 Degrees.

Marlin and Big Game fishing is not for the faint hearted, the deep burning sensation in your arms and the overwhelming excitement of a Marlin tail-walking and Grey hounding or a big Tuna appearing from the depths can make the hair on the back of your neck stand straight up and you skin tingle . Preferring surface water depths, they’re one of the fastest fish in the ocean, clocking up to 90 km per hour. The speed at which they can take line off the reel is mind blowing!

The excitement begins here!!

Cost of a Marlin Charter per day

Operating out of Ballito or Durban

In their natural habitat, the elegantly beautiful blue marlin feeds on many smaller species that fishermen can use as bait: tuna, cero, mullet, flying fish, dolphin, whole ballyhoo, skipjacks, bonito, Spanish mackerel, and squid. Any of these species, or a combination will give a fishing party plenty of good bait. Fishermen are also successful with brightly-colored lures and teasers.

The excitement begins here !!
